Converting family files in Legacy Family Tree ensures your genealogy data stays compatible with the latest version. However, file corruption can occur if your original file has errors. Follow this guide to repair issues and safely convert family file to the latest version of Legacy.
Fix Corrupted Family Files in Legacy
Start with that Legacy Family Tree version you were using before the corruption occurred.
- Open your family file or restore it from a backup if available.
- Click on File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair and proceed with the repair and fix any problems shown in the Error.Log.
- Now, use the current version of Legacy Family Tree.
- Visit https://legacyfamilytree.com/download to update your legacy family tree.
- Open the file you just created and convert family file by exporting.
Convert Family File to the Latest Version of Legacy
When you open the family file in the new version of Legacy, you will be prompted to convert the family file. Just click YES, and the conversion will happen.
Once the file is converted to the new version, it cannot be opened again in the old version. To move the data back, you must create a GEDCOM file in the new version and import it into the old program.
There’s seldom a problem with file conversion, but you can follow the below steps to make sure the data isn’t lost:
- You have to run File Maintenance on the family file in your old version of Legacy (Click on File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair).
- However, if you are in the old version of legacy, you can also back up the family file(s) by going to File > Backup Family File.
